Has anyone ever become a successful graphic designer using GIMP and INKSCAPE only?

Just came across this - http://forum.meetthegimp.org/index.php?topic=814.0

Someone is asking the same question as you but not about INKSCAPE, and it seems to have a decent responce

At least one uses GIMP - Ivo Kroone, the editor of Autozine. http://www.autozine.eu/

I had a discussion once with a beginning Pro from Brazil, who did photography and web design for businesses with GIMP and other Open Source programs.

For the Pro in the western world Lightroom/PS has its advantages, it is the "standard", people expect PSD files, the workflow seems to be better, there are a lot of streamlined filters and so on. The costs for PS are not a big factor in a business.
