Are Sitemaps Guides?

According to my knowledge in SEO and website optimization, sitemaps do guide users along with website navigation. Do you know if sitemaps are any good for websites? Since I do not have one in my website, should I install one? If I do so, will I get more visibility and traffic for my website? I would like some suggestion on this and on enhancing my website.
